Kaitlyn Abbot
Interview for a Photography Magazine
Key:
I- Interviewer
KA- Kaitlyn Abbot
I- We are here today to interview the winner of the National May Photography Competition, Kaitlyn Abbot. Now, Kaitlyn, what is you full name?
KA- Don't you already have it…?
I- Erm…Please don't be difficult, Kaitlyn.
KA- Okay, okay. Kaitlyn Anne Abbot...Aren't you going to write it down…?
I- Um, no, this interview is videotaped for a reason…
KA- Oh! But I thought this interview was going in a magazine.
I- It is. My people are going to…Are you trying to distract me?
KA- Who, me? Never!
I- Okay…How old are you, Kaitlyn?
KA- Please just call me Kate. Or Katie. Or even Lyn.
I- Okay…How old are you, Kate?
KA- I turned seventeen on the 25th of January
I- And what's your nationality?
KA- I'm American.
I- Tell us about your family.
KA- Uh…okay. Umm, there's my dad, David Abbot. He's in Advertising. There's my mom, Jenny Abbot. She's in Advertising too. They actually work in the same company, that's how they met, you know? They were working together on the same project really late and he asked her out for coffee and they just clicked. Isn't that so romantic? I wish I could meet my future husband like that.
I- You're a hopeless romantic, huh?
KA- Ma-y-be…
I- So, any siblings?
KA- Oh yes, plenty. I've got four brothers. All older then me. First there's Max and Toby, they're twins. They just turned twenty-eight. Max is newly married and expecting a baby girl, whom they're going to name Annabelle. Toby is engaged to this gorgeous and really sweet girl. Then there's Jack, he's twenty-four and an intern. He's going to be a famous doctor someday and become a billionaire. And finally, there's Adam, who's twenty and in college studying to be a journalist.
I- Oh wow. That's a lot of brothers. Do they scare off your boyfriends?
KA- [Laughing] What boyfriends? I've only had like…two before. They both lasted like a little less than a year. But yeah, those two were pretty intimidated by my brothers. Adam is the worst since he's the only one still living with us since his college is nearby and my dad can't see the point of him staying at a dorm. So yeah. They're all very over-protective. It's annoying, but sweet at the same time, y'know?
I- Actually, I don't. I don't have any siblings.
KA- Aw, too bad.
Sometimes I use a Polaroid camera. They're nice because then I don't have to develop the film myself…although that's fun, sometimes
I- Yeah…Anyway, there are still a few more questions about you and then we'll get to your photography…
KA- Can I ask something?
I- Sure…
KA- What exactly do these questions have to do with my winning the competition?
I- Oh, our readers just want some background information about you. For example, my next question: your likes and dislikes.
KA- Umm…okay. My likes…I like photography, obviously. I also like…horses, dolphins, cats, snakes –from afar, of course- oh and elephants! I think they're cute!
I- Elephants…?
KA- Yeah! They're cute! Anyways, I love summer, even when it gets really hot. I love going to the beach even though I never get a tan, I just burn and then my mum yells at me for not wearing sunscreen or at least a hat or something, and I love eating ice-cream in the summer because it tastes even better when you're eating something really cold on a really hot day, and I love meeting new people because, really, you can never have enough friends, and I love being sarcastic because it's just so much fun even though some people might find it annoying…am I talking too fast? I don't usually do that, I'm not a rambler, but I do it when I get questions like these. At least you're not writing this down. Well, anyway, I also like Chinese food, which reminds me! I love learning about new cultures, it's just so cool, although I'm not very good at languages since I sucked at Spanish…hmm…what else is there…?
I- I really think that's enough for now…how about your dislikes?
KA- Oh! Okay. Umm, my dislikes…I don't like moving houses, we did it like twice and it sucked both times because everything was so hectic and stuff. And…hmm…I don't like dogs, because they scare me. Especially the big ones. And the very small ones, like the Chihuahuas. Those freak me out. Dogs should not be that small. And I hate awkward silences, they're annoying and…awkward. Umm…I hate thunderstorms because they scare me. And I hate spiders ever since my brother made me watch this move called Eight Legged Freaks or something. And…
I- Okay, that's enough for now. Now, what do you say your personality is like?
KA- What kind of weird question is that?...Okay, fine, fine. Umm…I guess I'm sarcastic sometimes, but I try to be sarcastic in a humorous way, not a mean way. Umm…I think I'm pretty friendly. I smile a lot, even at random strangers. I think I'm kind-of quirky? My friends said that once. And they say I'm creative. I guess I have to be creative since I like photography and all. Umm…I think I'm pretty quiet, too. Not in a timid way, I'm not shy at all, but like…I'm calm, usually. Unless I drink a lot of coffee or eat a lot of chocolate. That makes me really hyper. I have a very low tolerance for caffeine. Oh, and if I get drunk. It doesn't happen often, but you know…I'm still a teenager. [Grins] So anyway…I'm also a hopeless romantic, and I can fall in love very quickly, but I stay in love too. I mean, it's not like I fall in love with three guys at the same time, nothing like that. I'm pretty loyal, too. That's why the two relationships I had with boys lasted a year each. The first break-up was mutual, we just kind-of…fell out of love. I was fifteen at the time, and he was sixteen, so we were pretty young. And then my second boyfriend was more recent…we broke up about four months ago. It was pretty painful because he cheated on me. I didn't even find out or anything until after he dumped me. His friend told me. I asked him though since the jerk hadn't given me a reason. Just went "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't think we should see each other again." And he did it by e-mail too. Asshole. Oh, sorry, I'm not allowed to curse, am I?
I- No, it's fine. We'll just edit that out. So have you given up on love?
KA- Oh God no! I'm still a hopeless romantic. Anyway, as I was saying…I think I'm pretty confident in myself. I mean, I'm not cocky or anything, but I'm happy with myself. I know I'm not 'whoa-you're-so-gorgeous' but I think I'm an averagely pretty girl. [Shrugs] I think I'm pretty playful. Like, I'm not afraid to have fun. I often don't think of consequences, though. I don't follow the advice of 'think before you leap'. Actually, I leap, and then I think, which kind-of defies the purpose of the advice, but oh well…I'm also a procrastinator. It's really bad. Like, I had been actually planning on entering the February competition, not the May one, but then I kept putting it off, and…yeah…
I- So in other words you're just like every other teenage girl?
KA- Yeah, pretty much.
I- Do you smoke, do drugs, et cetera?
KA- Whoa, that was subtle! Sorry, sarcasm…Anyway, no. I tried smoking once, but I didn't like it that much. My dad smokes, though, and so does Toby, so I'm pretty used to it…doesn't bother me none, although I don't particularly approve. I mean, they could get lung cancer, right? Anyway…I don't do drugs, I drink sometimes but that's only with like friends and for fun. I'm not an alcoholic or anything.
I- So are you straight?
KA- Uh…yeah. Where were you when I was talking about boyfriends?
I- Just checking…Now onto the more important stuff…Since when have you liked photography?
KA- Since my dad gave me my first camera, when I was eight. I still use it a lot now. It's pretty old fashioned, see:
Anyway, yeah, I just fell in love with the hobby. I loved taking pictures, capturing the moment and saving memories. I took classes and stuff in high school. It was my favorite class.
I- So was this the first competition that you entered?
KA- Yup. I really can't believe I won! I was so thrilled when they told me!
I- Do you have any other hobbies?
KA- Well, I like to read in my free time. And I love riding my bicycle during the summer. And I play the guitar a little. I took lessons when I was younger. I'm okay. Not brilliant or anything, but I like to mess around with it. And I can cook pretty well, too. I help my mom around the kitchen a lot.
I- That's nice. So what have you got to say to people who love photography as much as you do?
KA- Umm…Just don't be afraid to show off your talent and enter competitions and stuff like that. I know I'm definitely going to be entering some more. And just…good luck with your career? I dunno. I suck at giving advice, honestly. [Smiles sheepishly]
I- Well, thank you for talking to us, Kate. Readers, you can see the photograph on our website.
KA- Oh, it was my pleasure! Hope you guys like my photograph?
